Professor Becomes Another Victim Of September 11th
Back to Top
By
Sam Merier
On 18 September 2001, one week to the day after the attacks by Al-Qaeda
terrorist on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, four Muslim students
at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California, claimed that Professor
Kenneth Hearlson called them murderers and terrorists among other not
so nice remarks about Muslims. On September 20th Professor Hearlson was
suspended from teaching status and placed on paid leave. An investigation
was initiated that remains open till this day.
Professor Hearlson is a former Marine and has been teaching for almost
20 years.
It now seems that the accusations made by the four students against Professor
Hearlson are lies. The students are being forced to face the truth! One
of Professor Hearlson's other students contacted the college administration
on September 27th and notified them that several students had recorded
the lecture. Individuals who have read the transcripts of the lecture
indicate that the events stated by the four Muslim students never happened,
and that their statements were in error.
In a New York Times article by Diano Jean Schemo dated 25 November 2001,
one of the four students was quoted as saying, " If some of the allegations
I made were not maybe right, if my memory was shady, this is not the first
time anybody has brought anything against this teacher… (Hearlson) has
a history, and he obviously hasn't learned a lesson." In the same
article another student indicated that she still stands by her statements,
no matter what the tapes say.
Now comes the real dilemma between what is right and what is politically
correct. The Orange Coast College has an honor code that states in part
that " students are expected to refrain from all acts of academic
dishonesty". Surely any misrepresentation of a professors statements
such as the four students reported would qualify for disciplinary action
by the college.
Perhaps the professor's name, reputation, and honor will be restored.
He should be cleared of all institutional misbehavior charges falsely
brought against him, and he should be restored to teaching. The students
should be appropriately punished for lying. Whatever punishment the students
receive, if any, will probably never be severe enough to remove the insult
and tarnish to Professor Hearlson as an academic, a veteran, and an American
citizen. Justice will probably be glossed over by the institution and
the idiocy and insanity of the Politically Correct crowd will be allowed
to prevail.

Bacillus
anthracis, more commonly known as Anthrax, is a gram positive, rod-shaped,
sporulating organism. This organism occurs naturally as a zoonotic disease
that infects sheep, cattle, and horses. Anthrax derives its name from
the Greek word for coal, anthracis, because it can cause black, coal-like
scabs over skin lesions. The United States and the former Soviet Union,
as well as several other countries in the second half of this century
weaponized anthrax spores. The number of nations believed to have biological
weapons programs has steadily risen from 10 in 1989 to 17 in 1995, but
how many are working with anthrax is uncertain. More concerning is the
autonomous terrorist groups with ill intentions for using Anthrax for
acts of bioterroism.
The
disease may be contracted by the handling of contaminated hides, wool,
blood or excreta of infected animals, or by the purposeful dissemination
of spores. The latter is believed to be responsible for the cases of Anthrax
confirmed in the United States since October 2001. Transmission of the
disease is made through scratches or abrasions of the skin, wounds, inhalation
of spores, eating insufficiently cooked infected meat, or by flies. All
human populations are susceptible.
Bioweapons
are made when Anthrax spores isolated from the ground or other source,
multiplied, dried, and then ground into a powder for distribution. After
being made into a powdered form, Anthrax can be released from an aircraft,
such as a crop duster, or placed into missile warheads to be disseminated
at a predetermined height above the ground. The Office of Technology Assessment
of the US Congress estimated that 130,000 to 3 million deaths could occur
following the release of 100 kilograms (or 220 pounds) of aerosolized
anthrax over Washington, D.C. making such an attack as lethal as a hydrogen
bomb.
Exposure
to an aerosol of Anthrax spores could cause symptoms as early as 2 days
or as late as 6 weeks. Once symptoms began, death usually occurs within
1-3 days for most people. If appropriate antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin
(cipro), are not started before development of symptoms, the mortality
rate is estimated to be 90%. There is no vaccine available for civilian
use, although the United States military has access to a protein-based
vaccine that is mandated for use in all military personnel.
Barring
a bioterrorism attack, the risk of exposure is extremely low in the United
States. Since October 2001, only 9 cases of Anthrax have been reported
in the US. These exposures have occurred mainly in persons handling mail
laced with the bacteria. Anyone suspecting that they have been exposed
should seek medically attention immediately, as this reduces the mortality
rate. Anthrax is not contagious from person to person, although those
handling contaminated body fluids should use precautions such as latex
gloves.

Several years ago a tornado struck my neighborhood. Several houses and
mobile homes were destroyed and many more damaged. My home was without
power for three or four days and trees were down everywhere. Many volunteers
worked along with the homeowners and repair professionals to clean up
and restore normalcy. The Red Cross was there to provide sandwiches, cold
drinks, and Gatorade as we worked in the hot sun with chain saws, axes,
and other tools. I always remembered the Red Cross and usually tried to
give a little when I could. Most Americans felt the same way.
Then came September 11th, and many Americans looking for a way to help
gave to the Red Cross' Liberty Fund to help the victims of the tragedy.
School children collected change in the halls of schools, adults sent
in contributions in response to TV ads, and Amazon.com took donations
on line. 547 million dollars were raised 'to aid the victims and their
families.'
The Red Cross began to come under fire in late October 2001 about the
distribution of the Liberty Fund fund. The organization then announced
that 200 million dollars would be set aside for future needs. Americans
reacted to this announcement with indignation and a feeling of betrayal.
After Congressional hearings and the appointment of a new head of the
Red Cross, the relief organization has announced that all $547 million
will go where the donators intended it should.
The Red Cross admits that it misjudged the American reaction to the division
of the fund. The situation, however, points to a major problem with charities
in the United States. Most charities today are big businesses and the
workers, especially the upper echelon, receive salaries in the six-digit
range. If you give to the United Way you should know the salary of the
National head of the organization. Does a local scout troop receive any
of the money that the United Way gives to the Boy Scouts? How much of
the total money collected by the Paralyzed Veterans of America goes to
administration and overhead of the charity and how much goes to the vets?
Does a donation to build a Day Care Center in the West Bank of Palestine
really go to a school or for PLO weapons? What happens to the money collected
by Sinn Fien in the U.S.? These are questions everyone should ask before
writing a check to any charity.
There are great charities out there. The Red Cross admits they learned
an important lesson with the Liberty Fund. Perhaps one of the New War
goals should be to place more Congressional oversight and control on all
American and foreign charities.

As America moves into a long and protracted war on terrorism President
Bush has arrayed a mass of 'allies' to help combat this international
terror. Like his father's 'allies' during the Gulf War in the early 1990s
these 'allies' come with a lot of baggage and conditions attached to their
partnership in the alliance. The coalition now aligned with the United
States is a multi-national, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious gathering
each with its own agenda. If these 'allies' act like our allies of the
past, the United States will find itself handicapped more than helped
by this coalition.
During the Gulf War President Bush's father gathered the same type of
coalition to combat the Middle East's neighborhood bully, Saddem Hussein.
The Muslim nations in the coalition forced the US to begin the ground
war before the US was ready so the war could end before the Muslim holy
month of Ramadan. Saudi Arabia, the host nation and staging area for the
war, did not allow US service women to drive military vehicles. The Saudis
did not allow our men to have pictures of their wives in swim wear in
their tents or allow our soldiers to drink when on R&R in their country.
The US missed the opportunity to depose Saddem Hussein because our 'allies'
did not want him removed from power. Saddem Hussein has since rebuilt
his military, his biological weapons, and continues to shoot at US planes
enforcing the no fly zone in Iraq. There is evidence that Saddam Hussein
has ties to Osama bin Laden and still supports terrorism. Many of the
nations we aided in the Gulf War never miss an opportunity to raise the
price of oil when given the chance
The initial problems with this coalition became evident when Islamic nations,
some claiming to be 'allies', opposed President Bush's use of the word
crusade to describe this war on terrorism, a war we might add, that was
forced on us by an unprovoked attack by terrorist. The Islamic world objects
to our leader's use of crusade, our word for a holy or just war, but their
leaders, Ayatollahs, Mullahs, and other assorted holy men use words like
'jihad' and 'fatwah' at the drop of a turban. Even Billy Graham goes on
crusade!
The initial military operational name for the war on terrorism 'Infinite
Justice' brought Muslim protest. Objecting to the name, because only Allah
(the Arab word for God) can dispense 'Infinite Justice', our so-called
allies forced a name changed on the very people who were attacked 'in
the name of Allah'. The name is now 'Operation Enduring Freedom'. Perhaps
the name should have been changed to 'Nearly Infinite Justice'. We may
not be as 'infinite' as Allah-but we can come close.
The coalition must also decide what terrorism to combat. The Saudi Arabian
government does not want to interfere with the PLO, a major terrorist
group that has prevented any hopes of peace in the Palestinian/ Israeli
conflict. Twelve of the nineteen hijackers on the September 11th attack
were from Saudi Arabia. Will the coalition campaign against the British
Orange Terrorist Militias in Northern Ireland? Can the coalition end the
IRA's reign of terror? Will we try to stop Sinn Fein from raising money
in Boston, New York, and Savannah? Will the 'allies' allow the U.S. to
go after Saddem Hussein? Will the 'allies' really force their banks to
open account records so the terrorist's funds can be cut off? Perhaps
the war on terrorism will be limited in scope to bin Laden's group, al
Qaeda, and the Afghan Taliban . If this is true, the world is missing
a golden opportunity to rid itself of a true scourge, international terrorism
of all types.
With all the handicaps and conditions placed on the U.S. by 'allies',
perhaps we should go it alone.
A husband and wife were playing golf on the ninth green when she collapsed
of a heart attack. "Please dear, I need help." She said.
The husband ran off saying, "I'll go get some help."
A little while later he returned, picked up his putter, and began to line
up his shot on the green.
His wife, on the ground, raised up her head and said, "I may be dying
and you're putting?"
"Don't worry dear. I found a doctor on the second hole, and he said
he would come and help you."
"The second hole??? When is he coming???"
"Hey! I told you not to worry." He said as he practiced stroking
his putt… "Everyone has agreed to let him play through."

Food
Shop Owner Defends Himself With An Eight Pound Ham
A Gainesville, Georgia, food shop owner was forced to use an eight pound
ham in self-defense in early November when three teenagers attempted to
rob his store. Morris McClure, a 61 year old food store owner in the North
Georgia town, threw the ham at the perpetrators and then drove them outside
the store with his fists. He then gave the local law enforcement officials
a description of the perps, and the sheriff arrested two 17- year-olds
and one 16- year-old shortly thereafter. The 17-year-olds have been charged
with attempted robbery, and the 16-year-old is in juvenile custody.
McClure indicated that "They didn't get anything. I've worked too
hard to give up my money to three punks like that."
So speak softly and carry a big ham.
76
Year Old Escapee From Georgia Work Detail Captured After 47 Years
Back to Top
J.C. Fuller (76) was recaptured in Miami, Florida, in 2001 after being
on the lam for 47 years. Fuller escaped from a Georgia work detail after
reporting snakes in a stream near his work site. Fuller said the guard
told him if he didn't like the conditions to hit the road, and he did
just that the very next day.
Fuller made it to Florida where he lived an unobtrusive life for almost
30 years. He went to church, went fishing, and even voted.
In 1952 Fuller was given a four-year sentence for the attempted murder
of his girl friend. Fuller, however, contends she assaulted him and he
acted in self-defense. Fuller indicates that the gun went off accidentally.
He is currently serving the rest of his 4-year sentence (4 months). Fuller
holds the record as the longest escapee from the long arm of Georgia justice.
The
outburst of patriotism demonstrated by Americans in the wake of the attacks
on September 11th has been a welcome site, at least most of the time.
However, some people may think the glass containers of popcorn sold in
K-mart with God Bless America and a flag printed on it was a little overdone.
Finally a Texas entrepreneur has produced a must have 'New War' product
that every collector will want: an Osama bin Laden Piñata.
The bin Laden piñatas are being made and sold by the Rene Karam,
owner of JJ's Party House in McAllen, Texas. The bin Laden piñata
will sell for $30. 10% of the profits will go to the New York firefighters
who suffered during September 11th attack. Karam indicates that the piñatas
will be sold over the Internet.
There have been several orders from overseas and large orders from stress
relief clinics. Karam believes that allowing clients to bash bin Laden
piñatas can be a great way to relieve this 'New War' stress.
Flying
Duck Kills Man Testing Jet Ski In Florida
Back to Top
Leon Resnick was killed in late November near Fort Lauderdale, Florida,
while testing a water jet propelled craft when he collided with an airborne
duck. Resnick was testing the craft for Riva Yamaha, the firm for which
he worked. According to investigating officials he was traveling about
55 mph when he collided with the duck, fell into the water, and drowned.
The collision with the 10-15 pound flying duck (also killed and found
nearby) was equivalent to hitting a cinder block.
In
a 4-3 ruling in early November the Virginia Supreme Court threw out convictions
of three people in two different cross burning cases. One case involved
a cross burning at a Ku Klux Klan rally. The Virginia High Court said
that the burning of a cross as a symbol of bigotry was protected free
speech. The ruling declares unconstitutional a 50-year law against the
burning of crosses in Virginia.
The
symbol of the burning cross originated in Scotland during the middle ages
as the way a clan chieftain called his clan to battle. A runner with a
burning cross ran across the countryside, and the clan assembled ready
to defend its territory or raid the territory of a rival clan. It is a
disgrace to all lovers of Scottish History and those of Scottish Heritage
that this historic symbol in Scottish History has been perverted by a
hate group to mean something it was never intended represent. Like the
Confederate Battle Flag, the Ku Klux Klan and other hate mongers have
destroyed and perverted a historic symbol. These idiots need to invent
their own symbols and leave historic symbols alone.
May
God Bless Clan McPherson!
National Democratic Party hopes rose higher in November as their plans
to retake the South came one step closer to reality in the Virginia Gubernatorial
race. Mark R. Warner's campaign demonstrated that the South would vote
Democratic if the party moved away from the more liberal issues being
pushed by small groups within the party.
Warner stayed in the center on the issues such as physical responsibility
and gun control, even receiving a wink and a nod from important gun lobbies.
If the Democrats wish to retake the South, Warner's campaign would be
a model.
Warner will become the first Democratic Governor of Virginia in over ten
years. He defeated Republican Mark Early, the former Attorney General,
52% to 47%.
Columbia,
S.C. Fire Department Repays A 134 Year Old Debt
Back to Top
The year was 1867. The South lay in total devastation, especially South
Carolina. The city of Columbia, South Carolina was in desperate need of
a fire truck and fire fighting equipment. The fire fighters of the city
of New York, many of them Civil War veterans, raised the money to buy
Columbia a fire truck. Columbia promised to return the favor one-day if
the need ever arose. 134 years later, on September 11, 2001, the need
arose. Columbia's fire fighters, school children and other volunteers
have been working to make good the 134-year-old pledge.
The Columbia's Fire Chief, John Jansen, worked hard to promote the idea
of the pay back. He made over 40 appearances including NBC's Today Show,
the CBS Morning Show, and NPR's Talk of the Nation. However, Jansen and
the Columbia Fire Department had important allies in the effort to raise
the 354,000 dollars needed to purchase the fire truck. The allies were
the schoolchildren of the area who help sort the mail and count the donations.
One school, White Knoll Middle School, helped with the program and served
as a collection point for the donations coming in from all over the country.
The people of Columbia, S.C. repaid the debt on Thanksgiving Day on National
TV shortly before the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Helping to present
the check were students from White Knoll Middle School. Well done kids
and people of South Carolina!
University
officials for Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, and the University
of Mississippi at Oxford, Mississippi, have been investigating student
behavior at Halloween parties that involved students in blackface being
threatened by students dressed as policemen and as members of the Ku Klux
Klan.
The party at Ole Miss occurred in the fraternity house of the Alpha Tau
Omega fraternity and involved a fraternity brother dressed as a policeman
holding a gun to the head of another brother in blackface. The photo was
posted on the web. The two brothers have been expelled from the fraternity.
The incident at Auburn involved 18 members of the Beta Theta Pi and Delta
Sigma Phi organizations. At this Halloween extravaganza, the brothers
donned their Ku Klux Klan regalia and had themselves photographed with
a blackfaced brother who had a noose around his neck. The fraternities
expelled several members and suspended others.
The Universities are still investigating the incidents. The Clarion Issue
suspects that all three fraternities will be placed on 'double secret
probation' at least for the incidents.
The
Clarion Issue's Hillary Watch
Former
First Lady and now Jr. Senator from New York, Hillary Rodham Clinton,
was booed and jeered by roughly 80-90% of the crowd who attended Paul
McCartney's Twin Towers relief concert in late October. Mrs. Clinton was
trying to introduce a comic video clip by Jerry Seinfeld when the incident
occurred. The former First Lady has kept a high profile during the disaster
and many political watchers feel that Senator Clinton is posturing for
position to run for President in 2004.
Former President Bill Clinton received a much more cordial reception from
the crowd, and Sir Paul McCartney did not comment on the rude treatment
of Mrs. Clinton.
The Clarion Issue notes that Mrs. Clinton has not kept her
election night promise, made on national TV, to introduce legislation
to do away with the Electoral College method of electing the President
of the United States. Mrs. Clinton made this promise in a short interview
on election night as the Florida fiasco concerning the electoral vote
was unfolding. The then Senator elect from New York failed to mention
which 34 states with smaller populations would vote to amend the US Constitution
in order to hand over the election of our chief executive to the states
of California and New York.

Million In Gold And Silver Buried Under
World Trade Center Recovered On October 31st
Back to Top
The September 11th attack on the World Trade Center left 200 million in
gold and silver buried beneath the ruble of steel and concrete. The precious
metal was housed in the vault of the Bank of Nova Scotia at 4 World Trade
Center.
Spokesmen for the bank indicated that they believed the gold and silver
was recoverable and hired guards to keep an eye on the area of where the
vault was housed. The gold and silver were recovered on October 31, 2001.
The eight vault employees who were guarding the area on September 11 escaped
unharmed.
An Albuquerque, New Mexico police officer and helicopter pilot have been
disciplined by their department for using a police department helicopter
during a donut run on October 4th. The two men were punished by the police
department for landing a helicopter outside a Krispy Kreme Donut shop
in the middle of the night for a donut run.
A recent poll has indicated that since the September 11th attack Americans
have began to look with favor on commercials, especially adds placed by
older American businesses such as Krispy Kreme Donuts. Don't be surprised
to see an advertisement similar to this incident during the Super Bowl
in February.
In an unrelated issue Krispy Kreme reported an 11 cents per share increase
over a year ago. That was up 4 cents from the projected return.
One American response to the terrorist attacks of September 11th has been
the purchase of guns and the application for concealed weapons permits.
Gun sales in California rose 30%, and firearm sales in Texas, Oklahoma,
and Washington are up about 25% according to authorities in these states.
Other states have also reported increases in gun sales.
The NRA has reported firearm-safety courses, a requirement for concealed
weapons permits in most states, are booked solid into 2002. According
to one spokesman for the groups doing the background checks the number
of gun sales and requests for permits is up around 21% from last year.
In other post September 11th gun news, the states of Kentucky, Florida,
and Pennsylvania have agreed to honor each other's concealed handgun carry
permits. These states have similar gun carrying permit laws. The law does
not effect any other states or the travel through other states except
the three involved with the reciprocity law.
A Boulder, Colorado, man is in legal trouble over his mid-November removal
of 21 ceramic phallus symbols from a library 'art' display. Bob Rowan,
49, removed the offensive objects from the display in protest of the library's
choice of the display, an exhibit on domestic violence, rather than an
exhibit on the flag.
Rowan indicated that he felt the 'art' was more garbage than art, and
indicated that he objected to the use of his tax dollars for 'male-bashing'.
Rowan did not destroy the ceramic works; they were in a box when police
arrived at his home. He indicated he was going to mail them back to the
library.
The 'artist' indicated that she wished Rowan had confronted her over the
'art' and that she felt Rowan's action was an infringement on her freedom
of speech.
Rowan replaced the 21 ceramic phallus symbols with a small American flag
and a note saying, " El Dildo Bandito was here." Look out Kill
Roy…here comes 'El Dildo Bandito.'

Taliban
Threatens U.S. Troops With Death And Torture
Back to Top
The Taliban leadership has warned that U.S. military forces captures during
Operation Enduring Freedom can expect to be tortured and even beheaded
if captured. The statement came from Jalaluddid Haqqani, a leading Taliban
commander and veteran fighter during the Soviet War of the 1980s, and
appeared in a Pakistani newspaper, The News. Haqqani made the statements
in late October.
According to West Point graduate and Afghan expert Richard Kidd, the Taliban
will probably execute some American POWs to try and cause the U.S. to
overreact to the murders and turn World opinion against the U.S. It will
be better if the U.S. forces are willing to engage in local POW exchanges
to prevent the inhumane treatment of our servicemen, according the Kidd's
statements in the NewsMax.com news service.

British And 2 Amricans Moslems Die In Afghan Bombings;
American Captured Near Mazar-E-Sharif
According to the Times of India three British and two American Moslems
who went to Afghanistan to participate in the jihad against the U.S. and
U.K. were killed by U.S. bombs. They died (or were martyred according
to the Islamic spokesman) in the early bombing raids in late October.
The organization Al- Muhajiroun is an Islamic recruitment organization
operating in Pakistan to help Moslem "freedom fighters" get
into the war torn country. It is not clear how the five men got into Afghanistan
or if they were aided by Al- Muhajiroun.
In early December an American Moslem was captured in the Qalai-Jangi fortress
near the Afghan city of Mazar-e-sharif. Abdul Hamid was born John Walker
in Washington D.C. in 1981. He converted to Islam at the age of 16 and
was studying in Pakistan when the war began. He went to Afghanistan to
fight for his religion. TV talk shows are already discussing the possibility
of Walker being tried for treason. Walker admits he had seen bin Laden
in the Al- Qaeda training camps on several occasions.
There are other reports of U.S. citizens fighting got the Taliban forces
in Afghanistan.
Recent events indicate that President Bush will spread the War on Terrorism
to the Philippines in order to help government forces in that island nation
fight an Islamic rebel movement known as Abu Sayyaf. Investigations have
determined a connection between Abu Sayyaf and al Qaeda.
President Bush held talks with Philippine President Gloria Macapagel-Arroyo
in mid November and promised to work with her any way she wants. At this
time, American participation is confined to an advisory and training role
for the Philippine Armed Forces.
So far Abu Sayyaf has confined its operations to the Philippines and expanded
its war chest by kidnapping for ransom. It is estimated that Abu Sayyaf
has earned over $20 million from its kidnapping operations. However, another
Islamic group, the Moro Liberation Front, has reneged on a five-year promise
and attacked Filipino troops on the island of Jolo.
Abu Sayyaf now holds two Florida missionaries, Martin and Gracia Burnhan,
hostage on Basilan Island in the southern Philippines.

St. Marys Voters Oust Incumbants, Hase Wins Mayors Race
Back to Top
The citizens of St. Marys, Ga. cleaned house at city hall during the local
elections held in the seaside town in South Ga. on November 6th. Political
newcomer Deborah Hase, the candidate who ran an open letter and survey
in the Clarion Issue early in the race, won the mayoral election. Hase
ran on a platform of open government and more cooperation in the consolidation
effort with the county government.
Three challengers also defeated incumbent City Council members in their
respective races.
Many of the voters in newly annexed areas hurried to register to vote
in the city elections and voted for the challengers in the races. The
Clarion Issue wishes the newly elected officials the best of luck in their
new roles as public servants.

Peta Picks Fight With Gamecocks
The year was 1969. The touchdown club gave the Bainbridge, Georgia, High
School Football Team (the Bearcats) tickets to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta,Ga.
The team ate at the Varsity, Lester Maddox rode his bicycle backwards
around the track at halftime, and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were
playing the South Carolina Gamecocks. There are some things you always
remember, like the sign on a South Carolina Gamecock fans car… GA TECH
CAN'T LICK OUR COCKS! For a University of South Carolina football fan
it's the Gamecocks or nothing.
Now PETA (the People for the Ethnical Treatment of Animals) wants the
University of South Carolina to change its mascot to something that does
not glorify the cruelty and violence of cockfighting. PETA suggests the
fighting "Gym Socks", the fighting "Pet Rocks" or
"anything that doesn't perpetuate animal cruelty."
South Carolinians point out that cockfighting is illegal in the state
and the mascot is a reminder of the fighting sprit of the state. South
Carolina championed states rights, the doctrine of nullification, and
led the secession movement in the South in 1860. Men as 'proud as game
roosters' fired the first shots of the Civil War in South Carolina. The
first shots were not fired by a bunch of dirty socks or pet rocks.
South Carolina is a proud state. The University of South Carolina is a
proud university, and they are proud of their Gamecocks. Besides, the
South Carolina cheer "How bout them chickens" could never be
replaced by "How bout them socks."

For A Great World Series (Yogi Was Right!)

The 2001 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks
was a great series. One run decided most of the games. There was a game
that went into extra innings. The Yankees came from behind several times
with one out left in the game to win proving the Yogi Berra adage, ' It
ain't over till its over.'
This series had it all. There were homeruns, great defensive plays, and
great pitching with great pitching match-ups. There were manager strategies,
stolen bases, hits and errors. President Bush got to demonstrate he could
throw a curve outside the political realm and Fox allowed the fans to
second guess the managers with on line polls.
Even the blow out 6th game, where the Diamondbacks won 15-2, proved Yogi
was right when he said, 'Good pitching beats good hitting unless the hitters
are hitting the ball.'
The Diamondbacks won game seven 3-2. It was a great World Series. I only
wish the Super Bowls could be as good as this World Series.
Dear editor,
Daytona Beach, Florida is a busy and interesting city. There are 23 miles
of "The Worlds Most Famous Beach" to walk or drive on. With
the combination of the college kids, the spring break, the motorcycles,
and the snowbirds we have an over crowded and sometimes harrowing atmosphere.
Of all the groups, the motorcyclist presented the most awesome appearance.
There are times that they are down right scary, with their long hair,
tattoos, black leather jackets, and unshaved faces. Then there are often
the tough sayings printed on the clothing they wear.
One Sunday we were out driving when we stopped at a red light. Two motorcycles
stopped beside my van. The men driving the motorcycles were pretty tough
looking characters. Their hair hung in long braids down their backs. They
were wearing black leather jackets and dirty blue jeans. A shower would
have enhanced their appearance greatly. When one of the men motioned for
me to roll down my window I wasn't sure if I should step on the gas and
escape, or if I should comply with this man's wishes. I decided I would
risk communicating with this "gentleman." After the window was
opened he reached into his back pocket and handed me a little cross. Then
he said, "God bless you lady," and roared off on his way. I
was shocked… I started after him, but he disappeared down the street.
The last thing I expected from this tough looking person was the cross
and the "God bless you lady" was a blessing I carry with me
every day. Now I have given out over 6,000 crosses, and I always say "God
bless you".
God
Bless You,
MEH
Editors
note: The crosses mentioned in the letter are about two inch steel crosses
with a blessing inscribed on them. The lady's letter reminds us of two
important maxims: never judge a book by its cover and the Lord works in
mysterious ways.
