Jack Bruce’s Shadows In The Air

In the summer of 2001, Jack Bruce released Shadows in the Air. This CD reminds the listener of almost all the works of this important bass player and rock composer from his work with Cream in the 1960’s until now. On Shadows in the Air Bruce demonstrates his various talents and calls on other musical friends such as Dr. John, Vernon Reid, and Eric Clapton.

The first song on this 15 cut CD, Out into the Fields, reminds one of the style Bruce used on his LP Out of the Storm (1974), as does Dancing on Air. The third cut, Heart Quake, is reminiscent of the LP How’s Tricks (1977). Dr. John joins Bruce on Boston Ball Game 1967 and Windowless Rooms. Vernon Reid is the guest guitarist on 52nd Street, and Mr. Flesh. Eric Clapton, Bruce’s old band mate from Cream, provides the guitar work on the remakes of White Room, and Sunshine of Your Love. These two new versions are just as exciting and innovative as the originals. The song He the Richmond is also reflective of the music from the studio LP from Wheels of Fire from the Cream days.

Other musicians on Shadows in the Air include Malcolm Bruce on guitar, Pirro Rodriguez on trumpet, Jimmy McDonald on accordion, and Michael Xenon and Mario Rivera on saxes. Believe me-this is a great CD.

What is he doing now? Do you remember Todd Rundgren? Sure you do! Hello It’s Me, Love Is the Answer, and Bang the Drum All Day were a few of his songs. His 2000 CD, One Long Day, is modern and explorative with cuts like Hit Me Like A Train, The Surf Talks, and Jerk. However, Todd’s 2001 CD, Reconstructed, is of definite interest. On this CD Todd Rundgren revisits his hits in a totally different style. All the songs are backed with a new, modern mix. Hello It’s Me done to an Interface mix? Try it! Even the kids may like it.

Also of interest is the CD Stoned Immaculate, The Music of the Doors (2000). Here is a good collection of The Doors music done by various artists. Creed does Riders on the Storm, The Stone Temple Pilots do Break On Through, and The Cult covers Wild Child. There are 17 cuts on the CD, and the artists include Oleander, Train, John Lee Hooker, and even Jim Morrison & the Doors. This CD is worth a listen.
