Cluny's Corner

A Dog Gone Look At The World

Music Reviews
For individuals searching for a good jazz/blues sound, Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now, released in the first half of 2000, is a real find. This CD contains twelve cuts, all of which are covers of love songs from the 1930's onward. The CD features Wayne Shorter on the saxophone, Mark Isham on trumpet, Herbie Handcock on piano, Peter Erskine on drums, Chuck Berghofer on bass, and an orchestra led by Gavin Wright. Mitchell's covers include Don't Go To Strangers by Evans, Kent, and Mann (1954); You've Changed, by Carey and Fisher (1968); Answer Me My Love by Carl Sigman (1953); and Stormy Weather by Koehler and Arlen (1933).

Speaking Southern Additions to Your Southern Glossary
"J'voat?" This is southern for "Did you vote?"-a question heard often around the south on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November. Usage as follows:
Billy-Bob:"J'voat t'day?"
Bubba:"Nawh. Ah'spect (southern for I suspect) Ah'll voat after wurk. Who'd j'voat fer?"

Real American Heroes: "The Storming Yuppies Of 2000"
I see you Florida Yuppies of 2000-dressed in your pink 'Tommy' shirts, your khaki pants, and your brown docksides. You risked it all to storm Florida's Dade County, Canvassing Board Headquarter-a symbol of tyranny and repression, surpassed only by KGB Headquarters in Berlin.

Cluny's Corner A Dog Gone Look at the World: Elections - Recounting for Underdog
I'm glad presidential elections only come along two or three times in a doggie's life. I really get hot under the collar when elections take over the TV, and I can't watch my favorite programs. Can you believe that my master finds that who's going to be the next president more interesting than what's going to happen to Rin Tin Tin, Scooby-Doo, or Wishbone?

History's Currents: The Gracci Brothers
In 133 BC Tiberius Gracchus was elected Tribune in Rome, a position established in 470 BC to protect the interest of the common people of Rome (the plebeians) from exploitation by the wealthy (patrician) class. Tiberius Gracchus attempted to limit the amount of land an individual could own. He wanted to rent the extra land to Rome's impoverished, landless peasants.

Election 2000: What Went Wrong - How To Fix It By Al Pearson
The Presidential Election of 2000 was the closest and most controversial elections of the modern era. In other elections America witnessed Missouri elect a dead man to the US Senate, and New York elect the First Lady to the US Senate.

Tate's Trifles by Tate Tacon
"Susie dere?" "What?" "Is Susie there?" "Who is this?" This is the sort of dialogue that usually occurs right after answering the phone, and it almost invariably disturbs me.
Folks, this may surprise you-in fact it may even startle you-but most people you call are not sitting by their phones anxiously awaiting your call.

Gun Control under Bush By Sam Merier
In late December 2000, Americans suffered another mass shooting that occurred in Massachusetts (a state with very strict gun control laws). Consequently, this occurrence-again-opened national debate on the pros and cons of gun control.
